Casement and Awning Window Style Guide

5 min read

At Window World, there are no shortage of window styles but there are two classic styles that can really elevate the look of your home: the casement and the awning window. These windows are beautiful, functional, and versatile—and available in a variety of colors and sizes so you can easily create the perfect look for your home.

Think casement and awning windows could be right for you? Our home improvement experts are here to explain all the benefits of these timeless styles and give you some design inspiration!

What is a Casement Window?

Casement windows are vertical with the sash attached on one side so they open up like a door. They’re excellent windows for ventilation and bring in cross breezes that can help keep your home cool.

They crank open, making them great for hard-to-reach places and when closed, casement windows create a very tight seal. This, combined with low-E glass and vinyl frames, makes them an energy-efficient window choice. Energy-efficient windows allow your HVAC system to work more efficiently, saving you money on your electric bill each month and keeping your home’s temperatures more consistent year round.

An important thing to note is that unless they are large, casement windows don’t function as egress windows and will not provide an escape route in the case of an emergency. This also means they’re a secure option since they’re usually too narrow for intruders to fit through.

Where to Install Casement Windows in Your Home

Casement windows are versatile and can go in nearly any room, as long as there is enough vertical space. But remember that casement windows open outward, so there needs to be enough clearance outside your home for them to open.

Because they’re taller than they are wide, many homeowners choose to install casement windows in their living room and dining room. They’re also beautiful in bedrooms. The uninterrupted glass space helps make smaller rooms feel large, while making an already large space feel even more open.

What is an Awning Window?

Awning windows have the sash attached across the top and open up and out like an awning. They’re horizontal, providing wide open views of the outdoors. They crank open, provide ample ventilation, and even allow you to leave the window open on rainy days since it opens outward.

On their own, awning windows are great for areas where you don’t have a lot of vertical room. But for areas with more space, awning windows can be paired with casement or double hung windows to give you panoramic views, abundant natural light, and even more ventilation.

Where to Install Awning Windows in Your Home

Awning windows are great in kitchens, especially above the sink, and in the bathroom. They’re also a popular choice for basements. Just be aware that awning windows are typically not considered egress windows and, in the case of an emergency, will not provide a viable escape route. For the same reason, they are a secure choice since intruders typically can’t enter via awning windows.

Like casement windows, it’s important to ensure you have plenty of space on the outside of your home to open it. We don’t recommend putting awning windows in areas where you have shrubs or areas that get a lot of foot traffic.

Why Choose a Casement or Awning Window?

Casement and awning windows are classic styles that can be incorporated into just about any room of your home. Window World casement and awning windows are made to fit your space and are available in a variety of beautiful colors to match any decor. And with energy-efficient low-E glass and double or triple-panes, you’ll enjoy saving money on your energy bill every month!

When it comes to home decor, casement and awning windows fit into a wide range of styles. Whether you like sleek, modern decor or you gravitate towards traditional or farmhouse, casement and awning windows will blend right in. Both styles can be installed on their own or combined with other window styles to create a uniquely beautiful look!
